On this dark and chilly New York City spring day, New York mag's Intelligencer column turns our thoughts to South Fork strolls on the beach with a Hamptons brokerage war item that asks, "Is Corcoran staging a retreat from the East End?" The evidence offered includes the "consolidation" of two of Corcoran's Sag Harbor offices, and a reported meeting by rival Prudential Douglas Elliman's CEO with 16 Corcoran East End brokers who were looking for jobs. Corcoran's CEO chalks it all up to a misunderstanding and says some brokers are "going virtual." The item is all the more interesting, of course, in light of a recent story plugging the idea of a hot rental East End rental market this summer and sluggish residential sales.
