Welcome to Storefronting, a new Curbed feature. Storefronting charts the evolving retail scene in NYC not with an eye on commercial rent but rather on how new stores change the face of neighborhoods. As always, your tips are desired, to tips@curbed.com.
1) Soho: Two reader reports of the upcoming relocation of kitchen supply store Broadway Panhandler: "One of the store employees told me that B.P. is moving to East 8th Street @ Mercer in August. The new store, on the north side of 8th Street across from Au Bon Pan, will be about 4/5 the size of the current store on Broome Street. 'Going back toward Broadway!'"
2) Chelsea: "Here's a picture of Bottle Rocket (right), a liquor store being constructed on 19th Street between 6th and 7th. It looks very modern, colorful, and close to opening."
3) Central Village: Gothamist gets the word on Kim's Video on Bleecker Street (at Laguardia) giving way to a Duane Reade. Click through for Theodore Grunewald's history of the site: "Pre-Kim's --as the Bleecker St. Cinema--it’s where I and a good many New Yorkers experienced our adolescent introduction to art films--just as Woody Allen's character introduced them to his niece in his 1998 film Crimes and Misdemeanors."
