Ever wonder why it's so expensive to live in Tribeca? Perhaps the scene last night at 18 Jay Street will produce some clarity. Behold, the mighty back of the "74-year-old grand champion of boxing painting," Ushio Shinohara (above), taking out his black-fisted wisdom on a massive outdoor canvas while the paint-thirsty crowd cheers him on. "It was like the Wrestlemania meets Japanese crazy TV meets the art world," reports blogger Velvet Sea, who documented the mayhem, video camera in hand. Feel the neo-Dadaist burn as the master's monster hooks connect with the canvas.
Of course, if you were to, say, buy the six-bedroom, 4,400-square-foot triplex penthouse loft that Halstead is currently listing for $7.25 million at 16 Jay Street, you'd never have to miss a moment of the ringside action. Not yet convinced? A triptych of zen awaits you patiently after the jump.
