Ask Curbed: Term of Tears?

We suspect today's querier may need to call in a lawyer, but amateur lawyering makes for far better copy, so here goes:

The lease on my apartment is up at the end of May and I have not received a lease renewal from my landlord. After weeks of leaving messages and not getting any calls back from the management company I am at a loss. Should I not worry about this and just assume that I am now a month to month tenant? Are month to month leases common after the first year's lease has expired?
