South Slope Zoning Follies: A Highrise Gets Iced

The building above, now looming over Fifth Avenue and 16th Street in the red hot South Slope in Brooklyn, is one of the buildings that prompted South Slope and Greenwood Heights residents to push for a downzoning last year. Since it passed, the name of the game has been Beat the Downzone, with developers digging fast and pouring a lot of concrete to get highrise foundations done under the old zoning. Opponents have won some and lost some, but they're so happy the latest victory that they've announced a executive session vote by the Board of Standards and Appeals to kill an 11-story building at 182 15th Street before a public vote tomorrow. One down, several more to go.
