McCarren Pool Update: No Swim, Only Noise

Given that 5,000 people will be standing in the water-free McCarren Pool in Williamsburg/Greenpoint tomorrow watching Brit band Bloc Party, this steamy Friday seemed like a good time to update the state of things with the pool-turned-concert venue neighborhood tug-of-war. Besides the concerts like tomorrow's produced by Clear Channel spin off Live Nation, there's also an ongoing Sunday series of free Pool Parties and a free Summerscreen film series. The pool's future, though, is still up for grabs.

Enter Pool Aid, a group agitating against "corporate concerts" at the pool and for more community use of the site, including rebuilding it as a pool. They’re shooting a “We Are the Pool” video based on the 80s vid. Cyndi Lauper, Lionel Richie, Huey Lewis, Willie Nelson, Kim Carnes, Dionne Warwick, Daryl Hall and Bob Dylan have all been cast, but they’re still looking for someone to wear an inflatable “Pool-Aid Man” costume for a shoot at the pool on Monday.
