A reader who cruised the Gowanus Canal and waters around Red Hook over the long weekend with the Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment sent us some photos from the trip, which he describes as "definitely more surreal than the pictures probably indicate." We'll get to a couple more Gowanus photos after the jump, but meantime, you will note that the Todd Shipyard site and future home of Ikea is now devoid of buildings. The huge drydock that Ikea wishes to fill and make part of its parking lot is in the foreground. A few more photos of Red Hook and the Gowanus after the jump.

This is the old Revere Sugar refinery with the cone that is a Red Hook icon. The property is owned by Thor Equities, which wants to redevelop it as a residential and commercial project.
This is what the Gowanus Canal looks like from a boat. Note the, um, pleasure boat on the shore.
Here's the South Brooklyn Seine as you look toward the Gowanus Expressway. That's a scrap metal business on the right that may, or may not, have a place in a redone "green" Gowanus.
