Pedestrian Streets as Chinatown Panacea?

In Chinatown, news to charm the hearts of the Streetsbloggers: several neighborhood business leaders want to close portions of Mott and Bayard Streets to vehicles. Their reasoning:

"I want Mott Street closed, just like Little Italy," said Bonnie Wong, president of Asian Women in Business. "Chinatown is dead at night. We would like it to be a place where there is life that's bright."
If the plan is accepted, Curbed heartily suggests that the rerouted cars be stacked at the intersection of Rivington and Ludlow on the Lower East Side with the intent of driving the excess nightlife southwestward. Bonnie: call us.
