Times Square Gets its Sanctuary

Much as you've got to love a hotel with the slogan, "Setting a Distinct Standard in Manhattan Discount Hotels," let's be honest: there's not much room for 15" conventional TVs in this 63" plasma world. And so the news today of the passing of another Times Square bargain, the Portland Square Hotel on West 47th (above). Tom Acitelli reports that developer Hank Freid will drop $7.5 million to turn it into a new luxury hotel called Sanctuary. Rates from $265/night to $1,800 for the duplex penthouse; compare and contrast with Portland Square's top rate of $189/night. And repent.
