While Newtown Creek and the Gowanus Canal get all the attention--not much of it good--there is a third stream in Brooklyn that is barely ever mentioned: Coney Island Creek. It's a long-suffering body of water between the Brooklyn mainland and Coney Island described by local photographer and photo blogger Nathan Kensinger as having banks lined with "jellyfish, rats and fishermen." There's also a "Secrets of Coney Island Creek" exhibition coming up. For those in need of a fix of the old standby, however, there's always imagery of a boat ride on the Gowanus Canal.
