Bye Bye Public Housing, Hello Luxe Condos?

New, 109 comments

Will New York City sell off some of its public housing to developers in "expensive neighborhoods"? Most likely not without a major fight, but the Daily News reports that a federal housing official has suggested a sell off might be just the thing to help out the New York City Housing Authority. (No mention of how it would help developers who might be salivating at the thought of getting prime land on, say, the Upper West Side or near Dumbo.) HUD's regional administrator said displacement "is a concern" but "that is not necessarily a bad thing if you can create more housing with that." Money from selling "assets" could be used to build housing elsewhere.
