There are many things on the Landmarks Preservation Commission long agenda today, but one of the first results to come out of the meeting room, via Brownstoner, is that the Eberhard Faber Historic District in Greenpoint has been landmarked. Stoner quotes one commissioner as saying that "development fever is raging through the neighborhood—as well as fires—so the sooner this is protected, the better." The district is near the smoked Greenpoint Terminal Market and adjoins the bigger Greenpoint Historic District. It includes many, but not all, of the buildings that were part of the Eberhard Faber pencil empire in the neighborhood. Several of the buildings are already be developed as what one might call the New Pencil.
