Lower East Side Demands a Bathhouse

Some people spent Columbus Day at a rally demanding a redo of the abandoned La Guardia Bathhouse on Madison Street on the Lower East Side. The bathhouse and pool was built in 1901, but has been shut down since the 1970s. The $20M-$30M renovation would include a new pool, basketball court, fitness room, computer center and space for after-school programs. The Parks Department says the 100-year-old building is in such crappy shape that it can't be fixed, but that they're "open to any reasonable proposals for a public-private partnership to construct a new facility on the site." Meaning they're looking for a developer to do something with the site.
