Because there's nothing better than open casting calls to shape the future landscape of the city, the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects is sponsoring a design competition for the South Street Seaport. At the center of it all is a proposed new community center/gallery for the Seamen’s Church Institute, to be constructed on a new pier over the water. The general framework of the desired building is given, but then your inner architect and urban planner is free to go nuts on the area. The competition site has all sorts of photos and maps to guide you, and the winner gets a slew of honors and?best of all?a check for $6,000. The deadline to register is December 16. Hopefully some Hudson Square-level visions of craziness will be created. After all, it can't get much worse down there.
