Coffee Shop Shuttering Prompts Union Square Meltdown

"In all our many, storied years, no Eater story has gripped the people as has the saga that is unfolding at Coffee Shop, as venerable a Union Square installation as there is," note our food-loving compatriots. For those fresh to the story, the neighborhood landmark closed last week "for renovations," then acknowledged—by way of pleading signs in the window (above)—that the Department of Health might have had something to say about the shuttering, too. Ooops.

Actually, not so much, says Coffee Shop co-owner Charles Milite, who explains the intricacies of the saga in gripping detail in an email to Eater this morning. Thrill to the overpowering smell of lacquer while we await the re-opening, which could come as early as tomorrow.
