The Toll Brothers firm, which is plotting 500 units of townhomes, condos and apartments along the Gowanus Canal, is "confident" of getting approvals for its big development before an overall plan or zoning changes for the neighborhood are made. That tidbit, along with others is in a new overview of the Gowanus situation in the Real Deal with a riveting neighborhood toxicity roundup. It includes a consultant's review of all of the neighborhood's toxic hazards and their proximity to different new developments and already built ones. For instance, we find that toxic coal tar left over from a former manufactured gas plant is bubbling around under the Lowe's in Gowanus because some of it was too deep to remove. It's apparently now "a few feet" from a Pathmark supermarket. (The land was originally supposed to be the site of the Ikea that is now in Red Hook.) The Whole Foods Gowanus site has different issues.
