Tonic Closing Aftermath: Bread, Roses, Arrests

Speaking of Tonic, the protest planned for this past Saturday following Friday night's final gig at the Norfolk Street venue went off as planned, though the protest ended up lasting five hours, not the planned 24 hours. A report from the front lines: "The landlord refused to take possession of the building unless it was vacated. Marc Ribot and Rebecca Moore chose to keep playing music and not to leave; they were arrested for 'trespassing' and led out in handcuffs as a huge crowd of artists and music fans and others cheered for them in support." Another rally is planned for tomorrow at 12pm at City Hall; stated purpose: "To ask for public and political intervention to protect new music/indie/avant/jazz in New York City."
