GOWANUS—Holy crap. What is being described as a "baby whale" has been spotted in the Gowanus Canal. Specifically, the Coast Guard reports a baleen whale around 22nd Street, which is the Red Hook part of the Canal. Officials from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Riverhead Foundation went to check on the whale with an underwater listening device. The thinking is the whale might have gotten separated from its mother. Bad timing, given the amount of sewage that's flowed into the canal because of the Nor'easter. In 2003, a harp seal was rescued from the canal and named Gowanda. [Gowanus Lounge, Newsday, WNBC]
