The Brooklyn House of Detention on Atlantic Avenue looks like it's going to be the jail that keeps on giving. Details of the plan to reopen and double the capacity of the jail to 1,400 beds continue to surface. It's notable in the sense that the bigger, better jail will soon sit across the street from the 75 Smith condos and the Smith Hotel as well as other developments. The possibility of making making it a jail with retail has already been noted. It turns out that plans might include a residential and a commercial tower on the site. A lot more discussions to come, but no one has proposed putting a faux luxury condo facade on the jail to make it blend better with its new surroundings. Yet.
