[Gertel's, 8:52am this morning]
The rumors, alas, proved true: legendary Lower East Side bakery Gertel's, tucked deep down on Hester Street and renowned for serving what many believe to be the best challah in the five boroughs, is set to close its storefront this Friday. Racked broke word yesterday afternoon, then followed up with photo confirmation this morning of the closing announcements hanging in the bakery's windows (above). Racked sources say the building will be torn down to make way for an eight-story condo building. One small glimmer of hope: Gertel's apparently plans to continue its wholesale operation; stay tuned to Racked for more updates throughout the day.
