Downtown to Midtown: "Our Stuff Breaks, Too!"

As if in response to yesterday's calamity near Lexington and East 41st Street, some downtown pipeage blew its top today. Sometime around 3 PM water burst forth from a little old fire hydrant on the sidewalk along Broome Street just west of Broadway in SoHo, shooting into the air and gushing across the gutter.

Gasps and mutters could be heard all around. Shoppers and tourists were forced to sidestep the spewage. But the bargain hunting did not stop. Other than a few wet-footed whiners everyone kept right on, looking for the latest deal. These may be troubling times. But New Yorkers are a tough bunch.
