If you think there are a lot of people with suitcases going in and out of the apartment building next door, there may be a reason. Today's Times reports that a lot of apartment buildings, especially ones of the SRO variety, are getting hotel makeovers. The rub is that a lot of the "extensive retrofitting" isn't entirely legal. So far, the Illegal Hotels Task Force has complaints from 100 residential buildings citywide. There's a report coming soon. In the meantime, you might want to check out one of the hotels the city is trying to shut down, the Imperial Court on the Upper West Side. Rooms for as low as $129 a night, people, interesting activity next door included. Mom and dad will love it.
