The Hudson Square hotel boom continues. Over on Charlton Street, between Varick and Hudson, the Observer reports that voracious developer Extell has finally come clean about its plans for those buildings (right) it snapped up for $16M+. As expected, the land will be cleared to make way for a hotel?a big hotel. Lucien Lagrange has been hired to design a 34-story building named the Charlton SoHo. Competition in the area is fierce. The block already has the Sheraton Four Points (also seen in the photo at right), and the Trump Soho, Viceroy Hotel and Hampton Inn are rising nearby. What's with all the hotels? Due to the area's zoning, they can be built as-of-right, but perhaps not for long. Eliot Brown reports that the City Planning Commission agrees with the locals that the zoning needs to be reviewed. Will the 44ish-story Trump Soho be preserved as the nabe's tallest building? That'd put a smile on The Donald's face (if he's capable of human emotion).
