Architecture Watch: Shanghai Gets New Tallest Building

New, 12 comments

Ground breaking ceremonies were held today for Shanghai's new Tallest Building, Shanghai Tower. The 632-meter building designed by Gensler will best its next door neighbor, the bottle opener Shanghai World Financial Center which, ironically enough, was just named "Best Tall Building Overall" by the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat itself. The Shanghai Tower is made of 9 separate, cylindrical buildings stacked atop one another, encased in a triangular exterior, or "envelope," as those in the business call it. Expected arrival: 2014.
