The jail with condos at Atlantic and Smith in Brooklyn didn't work, but the jail with retail is by no means dead. To better its chances, the city city has trotted out a rendering of what the depressing building might look like if it expands and adds shopping at the base. The design--with a "placeholder" Trader Joe's thrown in for good measure--comes from no less than Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The city wants to double the size of the jail, which is not entirely popular in the community, where at least one person refers to it as a "potential weed in downtown Brooklyn's growth." One with shopping, though.
