Big Kingsbridge Armory Development Plan Draws Protest

New, 5 comments

Anyone who thought the big $310 million redo of the Kingsbridge Armory into a shopping center by the Related Companies would be an affair marked by love and cheer was wrong. The deal was officially announced on Monday, but today, a big coalition of 20 groups is protesting at City Hall calling for a community benefits agreement to guarantee jobs. Related is also developing the Bronx Gateway Mall and has faced significant disagreements with the community there too. The Kingsbridge Redevelopment Alliance has apparently been working on developing an agreement for more than three years. The shopping center will include a large department store as an anchor, as many as 35 smaller shops, a movie theater and restaurants. It will be called the Shops at the Armory and the City Council has to approve the deal.
