In the Fort Greene of 1971, which was just starting to undergo an early wave of gentrification, "there were 'frequent burglaries and a rowdy climate near Lafayette Avenue, a street of bars, prostitutes and narcotics addicts.' At the time prices for a brownstone had tripled from $18K to $54K. This movement to 'Brownstoneurbia' started with block associations and led to the landmarking of the area in 1978."
