It has been (egad!) four years since our first mention of what was to become the Thompson LES, and over thee years since construction of the Allen Street boutique hotel got underway. Now, after countless delays, poetic tributes and sexy pillows, we are on the eve of the hotel's opening. Except, uh, we're not. Sure, the hotel was taking reservations starting July 15, but we just put in a call to the phone number listed on the Thompson LES' website, which went right to Jason Pomeranc's 60 Thompson in Soho, and the kind gent who picked up told us the new opening date is July 22.
True? A visit to the site today reveals that the scaffolding and blockades surrounding the Allen Street entrance have been removed, allowing passersby to scope out the lobby. The equipment looks very much ready to go. The walls are adorned in some sort of rock. And as for the bowling-pin-type decor behind the front desk, your guess is as good as ours. The Orchard Street side is still a little, shall we say, rough.
