Breaking CurbedWire: Bane of Orchard Street Coming Down?

New, 14 comments

LOWER EAST SIDE?According to the Ludlow Orchard Community Organization (LOCO, naturally), 180 Orchard Street?the rumored 26-story hotel-condo that has turned Orchard Street between Houston and Stanton into a construction hell for the past few years?is currently coming down. From an e-mail LOCO sent out:

a neighbor across the street from the site just emailed me to confirm: they are taking the building down!!!! They have removed one entire floor already today! this is incredible. And we have not yet received any word from the DOB as to the status of the building.... nothing, after years of this, they would not even come to our last meeting when the Community Board asked them. All of this - - years of construction, the destruction of an historic street and eviction of businesses, a stop work-order of 6 weeks, accidents where people were sent to the hospital, 1/2 my building moved out (those with children) in frustration (losing the community several rent stabilized apartments that have since been renovated and destabilized) indescribable noise for years on end, dust and debris falling, buildings cracked - - and NO WORD from the DOB about any of this, to us as a community, as this building gets taken down!!The rumor going around was that substandard concrete had been used in the structure, which has finally climbed to a few floors above street level. We've sent someone down to the site, so hopefully we'll have some answers soon. A DOB complaint logged today says a crane is being used at the site without a permit. A stop work order is still in place. [CurbedWire Inbox]
