The Port Authority Office Tower: Meet the Contestants

New, 77 comments

The Port Authority has released renderings of the three designs competing to be the final selection for the 1.3-million-square-foot office tower planned for the air space over the northern bus terminal building. The competitors are the Rogers Partnership's Richard Rogers (as previously reported; rendering seen above), Cesar Pelli of Pelli Clarke Pelli and Kohn Pedersen Fox of, uh, Kohn Pedersen Fox. The Port Authority also announced that it had granted developer Vornado and its affiliates "up to two six-month extensions to finalize a 99-year lease" for the redevelopment of the north wing, so this may take a while. The plan also calls for work on the terminal, including increased bus capacity and the "renovation of approximately 60,000 square feet within the existing North Wing for retail use." But who cares about newsstands and Auntie Anne's pretzels right now? Let's settle this skyscraper situation the democratic way...
