The Windermere Strikes Again

New, 11 comments

To say that The Windermere has only now gotten weird is to vastly underestimate the most screwy situation in Hell's Kitchen. Still, this latest chapter for the boarded-up landmark at 400 West 57th Street is pretty crazy: A 38-year Windermere tenant, one of the last folks still in the building, has been booted from his rent-stabilized $104/month digs because for the past decade he has been voluntarily living as a homeless person. He still keeps his possessions in the apartment and picks up mail there, but a court ruled yesterday that in letting him keep the apartment, "the concept of rent-stabilized tenancy is warped beyond recognition."
