"The rendering is a little deceiving. The lot for 23 e 22nd is just a bit east of parcel on 23rd street on which 1 Madison stands. If the new building was straight, it would be partially blocked (on the north) by 1 Madison. If it cantilevered west, the higher floors would be directly in line with 1 Madison. So cantilevering east lets the higher floors "peek around" 1 Mad and gives it a North View. By the way, the townhouse over which this building cantilevers is gorgeous.
