Rent Hike Fells Another Village Institution

New, 16 comments

When it comes to small and quirky and Bohemian, few remaining Greenwich Village shops match Nikos Magazine & Smoke Shop, an always-open door on the corner of Sixth Avenue and 11th Street. Narrow and sign-less, it's where you go for your newspapers, magazines, 'zines, foreign publications or literary journals. No matter how obscure, they have it. And if you don't see it, you can order it. Nikos' devotion to publishing of any kind makes the shop a true throwback to old Village standards. Those standards are hard to come by these days, and now, so is Nikos. The Sun reports that the tiny shop is closing, forced out by escalating rents. A fire sale went down yesterday, with all items priced from 25 cents to a buck. Who is Nikos himself? A true Village type, that's for sure. Other than that, it's hard to say. He never gives out his last name, you see. Even to the Times! ?Brooks of Sheffield
