The Loneliness of a Long Distance Painter

New, 26 comments

The thought of painting a 50 sf bathroom can be enough to send a person to the corner bar, so imagine the look on the faces of these workers when they arrived at 785 Eighth Avenue with instructions to "Paint that wall." Looking up, they see a super-expanse of concrete rising 400 feet tall and spreading 102 feet wide above West 49th Street. Previously, it's been calculated that this wall area roughly equals one full acre. Between the prep and the priming and the painting (not to mention the porosity) it's anybody's guess just how many gallons this job will require. What's more, will the color compliment the glass? Or will this end up as a huge billboard? One thing's for sure: This job will take longer than a weekend to finish.
