Work has started on the $50 million redo of McCarren Pool that was approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission earlier this month. will return it to use as a swimming pool and community facility complete with winter ice rink, cafes and a skate park. Work got underway last week and the pool is now home to dumpsters, new fences, some construction equipment and excavation work outside the walls. The work on the Bayard Street side, in fact, is for the skate park that will be outside the walls of the pool. It's expected to be done next year. The pool itself won't be ready for a ribbon cutting until 2011.
