Cooper Square Hotel Trying to Smoke Out the Neighbors?

New, 7 comments

For all the back-and-forth between the Cooper Square Hotel and its East Village neighbors during the hotel's construction, there has been little neighborhood noise since the very large, very wooden doors opened in December. Oops, never mind. New York reports that an East 5th Street neighbor recently called 311 to complain about smoke from the hotel's library/lounge fireplace. On windy days, the fireplace's exhaust apparently sets a beeline right for her apartment. Klaus Ortlieb, the Coop's always-suave manager, told the mag the fireplace was inspected and found to be up to code. And besides, when the hotel's rear outdoor spaces open, the neighbors will all have their windows closed anyway to block out the noise. Problem solved!
