Ask Curbed: Post-Breakup Lease Travails

New, 33 comments

Writes an Ask Curbeder: "I signed a lease with my partner in June of '08, but we broke up and living together is now intolerable. She was willing to take on the lease as I plan to move and wanted my name removed so that I would no longer be financially responsible. I contacted our management company and they refused to take my name off the lease, even though she agreed to assume responsibility for the rest of the contract. I don't want to get screwed if she winds up not being able to pay the bills. If I get her to sign a notarized letter saying she will pay the full rent after February, would that be legally binding? How can I get out of this mess?" Advice/breakup stories in the comments, plz. [Ask Curbed Inbox]
