In the latest "troubling reminder of the '80s" that are all the rage nowadays, thieves have been stripping copper from the façade of 34 Union Square East, former home of the vegetarian restaurant Zen Palate. The owner of the building says the stripping began in September, and someone also broke in and looted copper pipes from the kitchens. One of the owner's daughters even saw the thieves in action in broad daylight, but thought nothing of it. Scrap dealers are now paying $1.20 per pound of high-quality copper, down from $3 a year ago.
