Scamster Tries Selling Someone Else's Building

New, 7 comments

The son of a prominent Harlem landlord has been shopping around a big commercial property at Lenox and St. Nicholas Avenues, even posing in front of the property for an article in a real estate journal. The problem? The guy, Henry Vargas, doesn't own the place. Prosecutors say Vargas forged documents to make it seem like he owned a 60% stake in 21-41 Lenox Avenues, when in fact it's owned by someone living in the Dominican Republic. Vargas struck various deals for the property (including an $8.5 million sale to the New York Road Runners nonprofit) before the plan unraveled. He pleaded not guilty yesterday. [NYT]
