Down By the Gowanus

The New York Times has another issue of its Key Magazine coming out this weekend, and the preview story now online is a look at...the Gowanus Canal! The canal "does not really flow -- it skulks." But for a stream of sludge, the canal seems to mean a lot to a lot of different groups of people. The development plans of the last few years and the recent superfund slapfight have "already altered the canal's identity, after decades of neglect, by making it into something valuable enough to fight over." Really, we're not sure that's saying much. [NYT; previously]
