Rent Wars: Bronx's Baby Stuy Town

New, 11 comments

The Stuy Town rent-stabilization ruling is already being cited in another landlord-tenant kerfuffle, up at 1600 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx's Morris Heights neighborhood. There, tenants argue that landlord Riverview Redevelopment illegally raised rents on 80 apartments it took out of an affordable housing program earlier this year. Tenants have refused to pay the market-rate rents and are now fighting eviction. The building got the same tax breaks that Stuy Town did, so attorneys feel the precedent strengthens their case. [NYDN]
