Staten Island's Freshkills Park Looking a Lot Less Dumpy

The 30-year plan to convert Staten Island's massive Fresh Kills dump into Staten Island's massive Freshkills Park is crazy, yes, but also crazy inspiring! It has already attracted High Line landscape architect James Corner and given us fan poetry and the longest magazine feature about a landfill ever. Photographer Nathan Kensinger recently trekked out to the forgotten borough to document the ongoing park progress. He writes, "Fresh Kills is now a rather quiet and serene site. Its landscape has more in common with a western prairie then with Staten Island's heavily forested hills." It's also the type of place where methane wells come with Manhattan skyline views!
