Inside the Superfancy 535 West End Avenue's Wacky Show House

New, 14 comments

So what do "21st century pre-war residences" look like? Like the above! Well, sort of. We recently heard that the total craziness that is 535 West End Avenue?which is trying to be the 15 Central Park West of the other side of the neighborhood (only with kosher kitchens instead of Robert A.M. Stern doing a Fiddler on the Roof imitation?opened a furnished model unit. This is made increasingly interesting by the fact that the 20-story pre-war style building has only full-floor and half-floor units with some of the biggest price tags seen anywhere. Surely this must be a model unit for the ages, and, oh, it is. But it's actually, as 535 WEA's website explains, a charity-raising show house, giving a group of designers license to go nuts (the theme is "Celebrating Extraordinary Women") in over 8,000 square feet of space. So while we're thrilled to get a peak into this new palace of plutocrats, let's just assume that they won't all be living like this. But maybe they should?
