So what was underneath the 625,000 gallons of stagnant water (five times as much as estimated!) in the Mott Haven "swamp" just pumped out by the Department of Environmental Protection? "Some 45 tons of soggy junk — including mattresses, car parts, construction and demolition debris, and bags of residential waste — that also had to be removed. Even the trees that lined the railway had garbage hanging from them." The cleanup cost $350,000 and the city isnt sure who to stick with the bill. [City Room; previously]
