Yesterday's surprise court smackdown of the state's use of eminent domain to seize land for Columbia University's expansion is motivating the troops in other local land battles. Anti-Atlantic Yards group Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn, which recently lost its eminent domain lawsuit, says the Columbia ruling gives its challenge new life. And some holdout Willets Point landowners are also feeling pretty good, but the city has yet to pursue eminent domain in the Iron Triangle, and as Eliot Brown points out, the Willets Point redevelopment is still a public initiative without a private developer.
