Hold That Downzone!

New, 11 comments

The vocal Chinatown groups opposed to the recent rezoning of the East Village/Lower East Side are taking the fight to court. The groups famously dubbed the 111-block downzoning "racist" because they feel it will drive luxury high-rise development into Chinatown (which the plan excludes), and their lawsuit aims to annul the rezoning's environmental impact statement. According to The Villager, "The lawsuit also cites a study by the Hunter College Center for Community Planning that contends the rezoning would accelerate luxury development and 'concentrate [luxury development] in low-income communities of color.'"
