From Playpen to Tourist Den in Times Square

New, 13 comments

In his column yesterday, the Post's Steve Cuozzo noted that the plans for Tishman Realty's hotel at Eighth Avenue and West 44th Street had finally been made public?through a reveal on the InterContinental Hotels website. Yeah yeah, we know: another huge Times Square hotel...Zzzzzz. But wait! What we failed to realize was that the 34-story InterContinental New York Times Square is the successor to the Playpen theater, the former gay porn palace that was demolished at the end of 2007 amidst much outcry from those who preferred their Times Square seedy. The hotel, designed by Gensler, is slated for a summer 2010 opening. Some color: "White glass along Eighth Avenue reflects the movement and shimmer of the street, while warm-toned granite on the 44th Street façade relates to the adjacent residential buildings. Featuring a restaurant and street-level retail, the six-story podium is topped by a sculptural glass hotel tower." Any naughtiness on-site will now come with a steeper price tag, we guess.
