The Times has a fascinating story today about how Mayor Bloomberg, who owns the limestone townhouse at 17 East 79th Street, is slowly taking over the co-op next door?combining it into his own home and bringing his total square footage to a whopping 12,500 (estimated value: ~$30 million). Bloomberg bought the first floor at No. 19 in 1989, and has added three more units over the years. The informal co-op has no meetings, and he's not a board member. Says the top-floor resident: "He's a great neighbor, and of course, we get the benefit of 24-hour security." [NYT]
