The mayor and city officials have just announced the source of the mysterious maple syrup smell that has plagued New York streets off and on for years: a New Jersey facility that "processes flavors and fragrances." An investigation into the source of MSS was launched following the latest occurrence last month. A map of odor complaints was cross-referenced with wind and atmospheric conditions and air sampling tests, and once the investigation crossed state lines, New Jersey officials joined the scent. It was traced to a Bergen County facility. It's harmless, they claim. [AMNY]
