In defiance of all the bad news splattered across the Jumbo-trons of Times Square, the steel support for some new super-signage is rising above the corner at 46th and Broadway. Thrusting skyward like a big clenched fist, this will be the topper for American Eagle's new glass-enclosed superstore. The ever-patriotic jeans emporium will take the place of everybody's favorite Howard Johnson's, which sat on this once-tawdry corner for half a century before it was recently reduced to rubble. If advertising dollars dry up completely the big signpost could always be put to use by the ever-entertaining David Blaine.
